NEW – First Day Photos!

Denton birth photoWhile having a photographer present for labor & birth may not appeal to everyone, I believe it's safe to say that EVERYONE wants pictures of the sweet new baby! That cute face appears and the cell phones and cameras come out as loved ones near and far clamor for pictures. Immediately after birth may not be when mom and dad are feeling their most photogenic, and they want to be able to focus on those first precious moments of bonding rather than snapping pictures and emailing them out. I'm incredibly excited to offer a new option for parents wanting to document the first day, but not necessarily wanting the full birth photography package - First Day Photos!

Denton Inanna birthJust as with my doula and birth photography services, I go on call for First Day Photo clients starting at 38 weeks gestation. If your little one arrives during daylight hours you call me as soon as you feel up to it, and we'll discuss how quickly you would like me to arrive. I come to your hospital room, birth center, or home and start capturing those precious moments right away. (For babies deciding to make a nighttime entrance you contact me when the sun comes up, as I will be photographing during daylight hours - 7am to 7pm.) Depending on how things went you can choose instead to get some rest, shower & change, eat, and then have me join you. If siblings or grandparents are coming to meet the new arrival then we can coordinate for me to be there ready and waiting, snapping those cute expressions and eager embraces. This session can be booked alone or combined with my doula-photo services, for parents wanting me to return at a later time for pictures with siblings, grandparents, or simply after they've had some sleep!

Similar to birth photography, First Day Photos sessions are lifestyle photography - I am not posing you, but rather quietly capturing the moments you are sharing as a new family. These may include the first bath, cuddles and kisses, dad learning how to put on that diaper & dressing, and grandparents singing to the new baby.

Denton Inanna BirthYour session lasts an hour, from which you will receive 20 to 30 photos in a private online gallery to share with friends and family. Knowing how eager your loved ones are to meet your new baby, I strive to have your gallery posted as quickly as possible! You will also receive the large sized files of your edited photos with a personal print release, allowing you to share the photos as birth announcements, in your baby book, or printing pictures for your nursery. I provided watermarked websized images of your photos to allow you to share on Facebook or other sites as well. Images are primarily in a warm customized black & white, with occasional color photos.

Denton birth photoFirst Day Photos is not a formal newborn photo session, rather they are soft, tender, precious records of these fleeting moments. While I cannot guarantee any one image, I will strive to document the emotion as well as the details - fuzzy newborn hair, wrinkled feet, little fists. Babies change so very quickly, and within the first week your newborn's entire appearance alters. Having a First Day Photos session preserves these sweet & overwhelming memories before they pass. Because I take a limited number of clients each month & I book several months in advance, contact me now to get your spot saved in my schedule! I can be reached at heidi@thadenpierce.org.

Fun to Come!

* Currently my tech/design guy is swamped with a major project but once that is completed he's tackling MY big project - a redo of my photo site with some new additions. I am very excited, as this will involve a new movie (complete with original soundtrack!) celebrating 20 of the births I've photographed this last year and two new photography services I'm offering (fun!!) Plus some design stuff which I let my designer decide on as he's helpful like that. Oh, and he's also the one who composed and recorded the music for the video - he is so handy to have around! πŸ˜‰

* The posts that were scheduled over the summer (testimonials, inspirational thoughts, tips for doulas) will be ending this autumn. Tips for Doulas won't be as consistent but I'll still be sharing those as they occur to me & I hope you found them useful!

* This fall I am excited to be introducing a series of guest posts from birth professionals in my area on a variety of topics, to include prenatal massage, yoga, the Special Scars group, chiropractic care, placental encapsulation, and more. The current plan is for posts to be every other week (Special Guest Saturdays) and if you have any suggestions for topics or people you would like include then send me a quick message at heidi@thadenpierce.org. While I'm focusing on locals right now, I may expand it to include other birth professionals outside my area, and they will be providing useful information no matter where you reside. My incentive is that I often receive questions about these topics from clients and rather than trying to answer them myself I'm going to the source! Having a post on my site with an explanation from the professional and a link to their site will be a great resource, and I'm having fun talking with each of the guest posters.

* The next baby brunch reunion has been scheduled and I'm looking forward to seeing sweet babies and expectant parents. It's going to be a beautiful autumn season.

The Power of our Words (Tips for Doulas)

The arrival of our third child was scary, to put it mildly. Throughout the pregnancy we did not know how bad things were going to get, and if our son would survive and if we would ever be able to have another child. We were beyond fragile - the most kindly spoken words were enough to crack my barely held together facade. A thoughtless word would make me come completely unglued. I was emotionally and physically falling apart. Continue reading

Photo Editing Assistant & Boundaries

This last week has seen several evenings of me editing photos on my laptop, working through the many (MANY!) gorgeous photos from the most recent birth. A little someone decided he didn't want to sleep and snuck out of bed to come "help" me edit. I thought if I ignored him he may get bored and go back to sleep but he just draped himself over my shoulders and admired the cute new baby in the pictures.

Our family homeschools, and we've officially kicked off another school year this month (though we school year round.) This symbolic new start has given me an opportunity to assess my teaching goals as well as my professional boundaries. With each change in our life schedule I have to determine how to best meet my family's needs, my clients' needs, and make sure somewhere in there I get some downtime and sleep! With the new academic year there are programs my children return to, which means our schedule is more regulated. In addition to their programs I'm participating in a new training this fall, requiring readings & coursework with actual deadlines. I'm also teaching the group childbirth class, along with numerous private childbirth classes this semester. Eeks! Busy, busy. πŸ™‚

Because of these commitments I've decided to set a work schedule for myself, and designate time each day during which I will tackle everything from emails to website work, answering phone calls to photo editing. It means my emails will not be answered within the hour, blog posts may be fewer, and my photo turnaround is going to be a little slower. But striving for this balance helps me to truly focus - when I'm with my children working on their academics I am giving them my undivided attention. When I sit down to focus on my professional work I know my children are taken care of and I can give my clients my full focus. I am feeling less distracted all around, which will help me better serve in general. It feels good!!

Tips For New Dads (Cont.)

The birth class Heidi helps teach has a class session where the moms and dads split up and they get a chance to ask all those first time parent questions they may otherwise be embarassed to ask in front of their significant others. The usual fellow who helps teach the dad half of the class was out of town on business, so Heidi asked me to sit in and be the experienced father. This is a summary of what we discussed.

Rub the bum with olive oil

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Put olive oil on your newborn's bottom. It'll make the meconium come off so much easier. You and your baby will thank me.

Meconium is really sticky stuff. It sticks to your the wipe, the diaper, your hands, your baby's bottom. The olive oil helps keep it off the bum and onto the diaper. Continue reading

Birth Inspiration – Believe

I am reading (and loving) The Gift of Giving Life: Rediscovering the Divine Nature of Pregnancy and Birth. Though I've heard this quote many times before, reading it in the context of this book about birth really struck me:

Until one is committed
There is hesitancy, the chance to draw back
Always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all acts of initiative (and Creation)
There is one elementary truth
The ignorance which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:

That the moment that one definitely commits ones self
Then Providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one
That would never otherwise have occurred.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision
Raising in one’s favor all manner
Of unforeseen incidents and meetings
And material substance
Which no one could have dreamt
Would have come your way.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

GOETHE

The line that leapt out at me was -
That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves, too.

When we make a decision, when we truly and wholeheartedly commit ourselves to a course of action, then even the heavens move because of that choice. We know birth is unpredictable and we are exercising faith in a certain path - it may change, there are always surprises, it's not that we are demanding any one course of action. But OUR faith, throwing ourselves heart and soul into the experience, is going to make things move. Things will happen when we truly commit, in a way that they will not if we are being indecisive.

It's always a leap of faith. "Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it."

Baby Park Date (Party #2)

In June I hosted a baby brunch for my clients who had birthed recently. I loved seeing their sweet babies, and a dad in attendance suggested we meet on a weekend if we did this again so the other dads could attend.

Today we made that happen, and thanks to the gorgeous weather (it was 20 degrees lower today than yesterday!) it was perfect for the park.

doula Denton

I loved catching up with the families whose lives I had been welcomed into for such a special day:

And of course, adorable babies!! I didn't capture pictures of them all, and some aren't due to arrive for a few months more so we'll be planning future gatherings to get more photos. πŸ™‚

This little one was our oldest baby in attendance and demonstrating the hands and knees positions for the others:

I know I say it often, but it's such a huge honor to be part of the care team supporting a family through their birth. That fact that these families continue to allow me to be part of their lives? I hope it means I did a pretty good job at this whole doula-photo thing. πŸ˜‰

Testimonials

I am overjoyed when I receive response like this - it is humbling to know that even my tiny role at a birth can help a mother feel supported.

β€œI had Heidi at the birth of my son four weeks ago to take photos of my labor and birth. Since this was my first baby, I was very choosy about who I asked to be at my birth as I wasn’t sure how many people I would be comfortable with having in the room at the birth center. Heidi was such a wonderful addition to my birth team – my husband and I have discussed over and over how glad we are that she was there! Her presence was extremely calming to me throughout – she has such an encouraging demeanor. She was constantly my advocate, doing everything within her power to make me as comfortable as possible. It is clear that Heidi has a passion and a calling for caring for women in this special season of life – we would recommend her any day!” – Kelley
