Before you were conceived I wanted you,
Before you were born I loved you,
Before you were here for an hour I would have died for you.
This is the miracle of life.

It's the lighting I most love with this one - the sunshine coming in from the rising sun, and the father holding his daughter for the first time with a look of such love and awe.

Testimonials
While parents may understand the benefits of a postpartum doula if they are first time parents, parents with subsequent babies may find the services of a doula even MORE helpful! From reminding them of those little tricks and techniques to helping soothe the baby so they can focus on their older child, to assisting with breastfeeding challenges they may not have previously faced - a doula can benefit every parent:
“Heidi came over and did a postpartum visit with me and it was WONDERFUL! This is my fifth child and yet there are still so many things I don’t know or need a refresher course on. She came over, talked with me and then jumped right in helping with whatever I needed. Including taking my very colicky 6 weeks old and getting him to sleep. She also gave me some wonderful tips and tools to help get him to sleep and help him stay asleep that have helped immensely. She is a wealth of knowledge and techniques. I definitely recommend working with her." -Kelsey
Story Behind the Photo | Denton Birth Photography
This couple was a photo client letting me practice with my new lens. I got the call early one morning that she had woken up in labor and I raced out the door. I arrived at 8am - baby arrived at 8:15am! This picture was captured just minutes before this lovely woman greeted her first baby - doesn't she look absolutely amazing? She was glowing.
What a Year! | Denton Birth Photography
Prior to beginning my certification process as a doula I had attended a couple births. I began my program at the end of April last year and my first "official" arrival was a year ago this week - a home waterbirth, definitely not the most common situation and one I was so honored to attend. This couple was incredibly well prepared and had a great care provider so I truly felt like I didn't do much! I had fun talking with the older siblings and helping with little tasks but mostly I was documenting with the camera. Prior to this I had not seriously considered birth photography as something I could do, and I had expressed my concern to the couple that I wouldn't do a good job. They were encouraging and supportive and I'll be forever grateful for their confidence in me, because attending their birth and photographing it was life changing! It's hard to believe that this sweet girl arrived just one year ago - Happy Birthday!!!
NICU Photography Tips | Denton Birth Photography
Entering the NICU is like entering another world, and it can be an emotionally jarring experience for anyone - even more so when it is your infant. Whether parents were anticipating an early arrival and NICU stay or if they were birthing a full term baby and surprised by complications, the NICU is an overwhelming and terrifying place. When a healthy baby arrives everyone is quick to grab the camera and snap photos to share - when a baby arrives prematurely or with complications at term there is often a rush for immediate medical care and photos are forgotten. Though it is scary, once things have stabilized then photos of these first moments and days of every baby's life are important to capture. Continue reading
Cesarean Birth |Tips for Doulas
Originally posted September 2011:
This morning (shortly after posting the video below) I got the call and raced out the door to attend my final certifying birth. We had anticipated a Saturday morning cesarean arrival but this little girl wanted to pick her own birthday, which was just fine with everyone involved! (Going into labor helps increase the odds that baby was ready to arrive, decreasing the chance that baby was not quite baked and will need interventions. It also provides baby with the lovely benefits of those contractions to help stimulate and squeeze their lungs.) This baby girl came out healthy and perfect and beautiful, and I was honored to be able to attend and witness (and photograph) her arrival. Hopefully I provided some doula support, too. 🙂 Continue reading
