Mommy Mantras

I don't often post book reviews here but today it struck me that this is one of those book so many moms would benefit from - Mommy Mantras: Affirmations and Insights to Keep You From Losing Your Mind will help save your sanity. Truly.

After reading it (several times!) I wrote up some of the mantras, laminated them and put magnets on them and hung them on my fridge. Today I think I've used them all. πŸ™‚ The book is funny, insightful, compassionate, thought provoking, and it will help get you through your day.

Cesarean Birth Video

Because many locations don't allow video in the OR, I thought this was a wonderful clip to share. It is a birth, obviously, so if you are squeamish or feeling sensitive about a cesarean birth experience then please be cautious about viewing. (Yes, I include that same disclaimer for vaginal birth videos.) πŸ™‚

I think this is also helpful for doulas to watch as you may be in the OR and depending on where they have you set up you may have the opportunity to watch the birth. I found it fascinating the first time I was in the OR (and allowed to photograph the entire procedure from both sides of the drape) but I know not everyone shares my fascination. Also for dads who will be in the OR, sometimes it's easier to see how things play out on a video before you're watching your wife go through the experience.

Your Birth Story

Denton Birth Doula Photography

During each birth I try to take notes on my phone - funny comments made, where and how mom labored, when she started pushing, the first nursing session, etc. Then after the birth I type up that timeline and add my notes and thoughts. I print a copy for the parents to save in their baby book and email them a digital copy.

My timeline is obviously an outside perspective, so before parents ever look at it I encourage them to BOTH write their version of the birth story. Rather than letting the objective timeline influence their memories, I want their birth story to be of the emotions and thoughts they had through the process. Then once their version is down on paper they can read the timeline and incorporate it into their story or simply keep it as a separate addition. I remember reading my doula's timeline from one of our births and I really thought I pushed forever - until I read her notes and saw I pushed for about 20 minutes. πŸ™‚ Continue reading

Welcome to the World, Son! | Denton Birth Photography

This amazing father supported his wife through labor, caught his son as she pushed so beautifully, and gently placed that sweet baby right into his arms. Then there was the newborn exam, congratulations from the family, and getting settled. After dressing him (with some help from grandmother) this dad then leaned over and spent some quiet moments greeting his brand new baby boy.

Story Behind the Photo | Denton Birth Photography

Grandmother came racing in from out of state, arriving literally two minutes before mom began pushing. Grandfather wasn't able to make it, but minutes after the birth he was on the phone to wish his daughter joy on her new baby. Such loving grandparents and parents!

Childbirth Class

Because of work commitments I am not offering the childbirth class at this time. If you are in need of a class please feel free to contact me and I can help connect you with local resources. In some situations I am still able to offer a condensed class, depending on scheduling. I can be reached at heidi@thadenpierce.org. Thank you!

During my doula training I attended several childbirth classes, including sitting in on an entire series of Birthing From Within as taught by two local Certified Nurse Midwives. Over the last year I've been fortunate to be mentored by these midwives as I assist with teaching this class numerous times, then had them watch while I taught the class, and finally taught solo! It's been a wonderful learning experience for ME, as each set of students has asked such insightful questions and caused me to further research and educate myself.

I think the ideal is always to attend a group childbirth class, as the questions asked and the interaction between students is incredibly beneficial. Not all parents are able to attend due to timing, scheduling, and distance. With the encouragement and input of the midwives I've worked to create a condensed childbirth class combining aspects of their class with my additions. Because this is not a specific childbirth program I am able to incorporate components of many approaches and a variety of materials. The link above provides more information about what I cover, and I'm excited to utilize some fantastic resources that will enrich your childbirth experience.

My curriculum is designed to be taught in three sessions of approximately 3 hours each. We'll meet in your home (depending on location) or my home if you are coming from out of town. You'll receive a course packet, access to my lending library with a recommending reading list, and a condensed version of my Happiest Baby class. (Those desiring the full Happiest Baby class can of course request that!) Anyone who will be attending your birth is encouraged to attend our second session, as we will discuss comfort techniques & your care team.

My goal is to custom fit this class to meet your needs, and it can also be combined with my other services. I am offering a sibling class, which can be added to our curriculum if you would like your other children to be involved. The childbirth class can be combined with my doula services for a discounted fee - instead of meeting twice prenatally for 1 to 2 hours as I normally do with doula clients we would instead visit three times for 3 hours each session. This allows us to get to know each other even better as we prepare for your big day!

Due to my doula commitments I take a limited number of childbirth class clients each month, and on occasion I may need to reschedule our session because I am called to a birth. Because of this I suggest parents give themselves at least four weeks to complete the class and readings, with a goal to be done by 38 weeks gestation. If at all possible we would begin no later than 34 weeks gestation, but if you are past this date don't despair! Please contact me and we can discuss scheduling to get your class started asap.

Any questions or want to book me now? I can be reached at heidi@thadenpierce.org. Thank you!

Here's a peek at the packet and partial lending library (minus some DVDs and a book already out on loan.) Don't worry, recognizing most of us have limited reading time I specify which chapters are the most important to cover before your birth!

Testimonials

In a way my goal as a doula is to help parents gain the skills & knowledge to birth even without a doula! Though I think a doula can benefit every birth, of course. πŸ˜‰ Knowing they feel more confident and have the resources to birth how they want means I have done my job well, and that feels wonderful!

β€œWe LOVE Heidi! We had many uncertainties and doubts about the process of giving birth. Heidi not only gave us confidence and support where books, websites, and other mothers were lacking. We plan on working with her again even though we feel a lot more educated and empowered by our first experience. She is very attentive to every family member’s needs. Her wealth of knowledge is deep. We highly recommend Heidi.” – Melissa
