Lending Library Addition – Sleep & Nursing

Nursing Mother, Working Mother & the Sears' Baby Sleep BookI'm grateful to live in such a strong, supportive, amazing community for families. Despite our town's population (120,000+ in addition to two state universities) it still feels like a small town where the librarian greets our kids by name, the photo shop has my pictures ready when I walk in the door, and the donut shop gives our littlest a pink frosted donut hole whenever we visit. (Which is much too often, really.)

I'm also thankful to be surrounded by like minded parents. Though our philosophies may not perfectly align (whose ever do??) they are thoughtful, mindful, kind parents. I learn so much from them, and I am blessed by the network of parents they have created as we share this journey.

One of them in particular who has mentored me as well as many others is Alison, and this weekend she texted me to say she had picked up some books for my lending library at a recent sale. I didn't even know the Sears' had a sleep book! I'm glad to have these resources for new parents, and grateful to call Alison a friend. 🙂

Newborn Exam

newborn examThe Ballard score helps care providers assess what gestation the baby is based on various physical markers. You can read more about it at the link above but if you were curious why the midwives look at the wrinkles on baby's feet or do those funny little stretching exercises, that link explains why!

Birth Stories – Baby A

BirthStory - BetterBirthDoula.orgAva's birth story involves a birth center, a transfer to the hospital, one of the hardest working women I've ever met, her incredibly supportive husband, and an utterly adorable baby girl. I was thrilled to be a part of their birth experience.

Ava’s Birth Story
(as best I can remember)
On Wednesday, December 19, I started having contractions while walking Walter. I used a contraction timer and realized they were very close together. I called Adam and told him I thought I was in labor. I had had an appointment at Inanna that morning and she had attempted to strip my membranes and had told me to use the breast pump and walk to try and get labor going. It had worked! (Or so we thought). I had a follow-up at Inanna to do bloodwork later, so when I got there, Jean checked me and said that I had dilated from a 2 to a 3 and she thought I was in labor! She told me to call my family and have them start heading our way because I was going to have a baby that night. She also had an ultrasound scheduled for me because she thought I had a big baby. I called my family and they started coming down. Adam and I went to have the ultrasound done, but by the time the ultrasound was over, the contractions had started slowing. Afterwards, we kept pumping and got packed because Jean wanted to see us again that evening. When I went back in, Jean checked me and said I had not dilated any more and she didn’t’ think I was in labor after all. She gave me a double Nubain injection and sent me home to sleep with instructions to come back in the morning. The Nubain knocked me out in minutes. I could feel the pressure of the contractions all night and then they stopped some time in the middle of the night. The Nubain made me sick and I threw up, which wasn’t fun. The next morning I went back and saw Betty. The contractions had stopped. Betty said she wanted to take that day for my body to relax. She told me not to pump or try to start labor. I was really disappointed. I was also stressed because my family had already come down. We spent the rest of the day with my family. The next morning, I came back to Inanna and Jean stripped my membranes and told me to start pumping and walking. Mom, Kristen, and Kelsey were at the house and so I pumped and took Walter on a long walk with Kristen and Kelsey. That did it! Continue reading

Services – Photo vs. Doula | Denton Birth Photographer

Two years ago this month I became a certified doula! Today marks the kick off of my new packages and fees as well. I wanted to clarify the difference between my two services - doula vs. photo - by sharing again this post from August 2012.

My birth doula information page is here and this is my photo information page. I've been asked what's the difference between the two packages?

Birth Stories – Baby Lulu

IMG_8954To follow up from the most recent birth story, here's the story of Lulu, Gracie's younger sister! I had the honor of photographing her birth. That photo is of her meeting her grandmother. I know Lulu's mom, Amber, as she's the owner of Soma Denton and gives the best massages in the whole world. (She's AMAZING, go check out Soma!)

Sneak Peak IV – Dad

It is incredible to witness a woman become a mother - it's also incredible to see a man become a father. While watching a firstborn arrive and seeing that shift is really neat, it's also fascinating to me when I see a father welcome his second - of fourth baby! There's a different level of confidence and there's an excitement there that they know what they are about to face, and they're so overjoyed to welcome this new child into their lives knowing full well the sleep deprivation that's about to come! 🙂 Jeff is a fantastic father, and I was grateful for the privilege to be there to support him and Amy as they welcomed their newest child.

Denton County BirthNetwork Baby Fair Success!

DCBN Baby FairThis is the first Baby Fair (or ANY fair!) I've helped to coordinate, and I was nervous about how we would pull it up. The autumn thunderstorm that flooded the parking lot did not help ease that worry. 🙂 But it worked, thanks to fantastic co-leaders and an inspired friend calling literally as I pulled up to the library asking if she could help set up. Plus Kit and the kids chipped in to help!

I lost track, but I saw numerous babies whose births I attended, more whom I helped with their parents' childbirth class, current class students, these beautiful doula clients, plus inquiries about more cute babies on their way. While I was there as a chapter leader for the Denton County BirthNetwork I was also staffing the table for the Inanna Birth Center (where I midwife assist) and my own business. Busy, busy but beautiful day.

DCBN Baby FairIf you are interested in becoming a professional member of our BirthNetwork then you receive listings in the national guide, our local guide, as well as the DFW area wide print edition coming out next year - but listings are due ASAP so move fast! I can walk you through the process. Professional membership also means we keep your business materials on a special table at our meetings (even if you cannot attend) and we choose guest speakers from our membership. Our next meeting for the DCBN is Monday, October 7th from 7-8:30pm and we'll be hearing from two local IBCLCs about breastfeeding. Email me if you want a link to our FB event page - heidi@thadenpierce.org.
