Thank you to Eli's parents for allowing me to share a link to his birth story. I was fortunate to help teach their childbirth class and to photograph their birth - they're a beautiful family! (Apparently I did a good job sneaking in quietly to capture her birth!) Go read her story of their journey, which is funny and sweet and inspiring!
New Lens – Tiny Toes
I upgraded one of my lenses - and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw this photo straight out of camera. Sharp, gorgeous, beautiful. I'm looking forward to playing with this many more times for the detail shots with babies. I still prefer my 35mm lens for labor/birth/family photo but when I'm playing with the newborn I'm thinking this new 50mm is going to be my go to lens.
Midwife Love
During the midwife exam at this homebirth I noticed the green ribbon. Each of us who attended this mom's blessingway had a green ribbon tied around our wrists symbolizing our connection and reminding us to pray for the mom through her labor. Since the mom is also a birth professional she was surrounded at her blessingway and labor by friend-colleagues. Both occasions were quite the parties! But seeing the ribbon for me was a sweet reminder of that extra special connection the midwife shared with this mom. While midwives tend to have a different level of interaction with their clients (vs. what a busy OB may have) this midwife and birth were extraordinary.
Newborn Exam
There is something so tender and sweet about watching the midwife at an out of hospital birth give the new baby their first check up.

Weigh In
At homebirths one of the responsibilities often given to the father is to weigh the baby (and that's the smiling midwife looking on.) I think it may be that job is shared as holding up a chunky newborn that high in the air takes some good upper body strength. 🙂
What a Surprise to Wake Up To!
The big brother slept through the night (a friend was there to listen for him in case he woke up) and what a surprise he woke up to! He got in a few cuddles with mom while checking out the new little arrival. This was a surprise gender baby, and the big brother was quite adamant that he knew who was coming. When it was discovered his baby sister was actually a baby brother you could tell it took a few minutes to process - but I have no doubt they will become the best of friends.
Doulas & Support
I love being able to convey how perfectly doulas work with moms AND their support person. Here dad's giving mom lower back pressure while the doula was sharing some comforting words, and in the other photo the dad had gone to grab something and the doula was talking with mom. Having a doula at your birth really does help ensure that moms AND their partner receive support.

It’s a……
This was a surprise gender baby, and I caught their expressions as the parents made the announcement! I love each of their faces - mom, dad, and midwife.
